LA Connection Property Blog: Sarah Palin lied, and John McCain perpetuated her lie at the Republican Covention

Sarah Palin lied, and John McCain perpetuated her lie at the Republican Covention

Sarah Palin lied, and John McCain perpetuated her lie at the Republican Convention.

Fact ... Sarah Palin did list the jet on ebay four times, unsuccessfully. "The eBay thing didn't work out very well", said Dan Spencer, director of administrative services for the Department of Public Safety.

Fact ... An Anchorage aircraft broker landed up negotiating the sale of the jet to an Alaskan businessman - Larry Reynolds.

Fact ... The $2.7 Million jet was sold for $2.1 Million - for a loss. McCain and Palin claimed the jet was sold for a profit.

Is this a "CHANGE" from George Bush? I don't think so. More lies, more exaggerations, more spin.

Hi Stewart,

Wow!!  Have the news media gotten a hold of this, or are they ignoring it????  Did she  get federal tax credits for depreciation from the aircraft?  Did it bring any lease monies?    I agree with you 100%, the last thing we need is 8 more years of hardship.....

Maybe it is the same theory as a new car .....how much does it depreciate after it leaves the showroom......if it is not costing the taxpayers money, I see it as a profit..........especially living in NJ, the state of landfill and corruption!

My point is that Sarah Palin and John McCain LIED .... and for nor apparent reason except to create a good "one-liner".

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago

Chuck - I'm curious to hear why this blatant lie makes no difference.

Kim - I agree with you that Obama will have issues to deal with - but Obama hasn't lied to America.

I'm laughing at this "big story".

I thought I heard her say in her speech that she "put it on Ebay".  I think many other people began saying that she "sold it on Ebay".  I think it was kind of a joke. That's how I took it. I was surprised when I heard the report that she did actually have it on Ebay.

If this is all they can get Sarah Palin on, I think that's pretty good.

Now what gets me is when Obama comes out and says that he never heard any of those nasty sermons that Reverend Wright gave over the 20 years he was a member of his congregation.  I don't think he said that as a joke.  He was serious about that.

Tim, when Sarah Palin was introduced in Ohio, I believe she did state that she sold it on Ebay for a profit.

Stewart, will you cite your source please?

Stewart, if you haven't gotten the memo - every last one of us is guilty of lying!  Would it have been better if she had just held the jet and let it waste the taxpayers money?  She made cuts.  Not everything we do in life, do we ever get a 100% approval rating from our loved ones and family.

God love and bless the liberals because we need you but focus on the things that are constructive where it will make change instead of pointing fingers.  Remember, when we point fingers, there are about three of 'em coming back at us.

Obviously, it's public record how the jet was sold. Even if she said "sold" it was definitely for the sake of a one liner., but I recall that Sarah Palin said that she "listed it" on eBay. Your bias is quite apparent. Much ado about nothing.

Sarah is charming and bright and a media darling. And I'm not much worried about Alaska's loss on the d@mn Jet. BUT.... I AM worried about her positions on Choice, and Marriage Equality, and Guns.

Amanda - During her speech at the Republican National Convention, Sarah Palin said that when she took office, she first started cutting state spending by selling her predecessor's jet.

She said: "I put it on eBay."

I acknowledge that she didn't say "I sold it on ebay".

BUT - if she put on on ebay and therafter used an aircraft broker to actually get the jet sold, why create the "illusion" or "perception" that she sold it through ebay.

Campbell Brown and Sarah Palin in a Celebrity Deathmatch would be entertaining.  I think it would look like something from Kill Bill.  (Vol 2 of course.)

I think McCain/Palin is exactly what Washington needs to shake things up a bit.  I wasn't a huge supporter until the convention.  Who cares about the stupid plane comment.  I agree with Tim, I think Obama has a lot more explaining to do.  Why let one small comment change the fact that her experience out ways Biden (and Obama) by a mile.

Stewart, I was actually looking for your source that she lied about it selling. I hadn't heard otherwise until I read your post.

I am a Sarah Palin fan and I know that I heard either her or McCain state clearly that she put it on Ebay for a profit.

Posted by Amanda Hall * FORT WORTH TEXAS Real Estate Broker * (Hall Team Homes) over 3 years ago

Amanada - I've listened to her speech at the Convention (It's on YouTube) .... and she actually didn't say she SOLD it on ebay .... she said she "put it on ebay".

McCain said: "How many saw her speech a couple of nights ago? Wasn't it fabulous?" - "You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was purchased by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — and made a profit."

Subtle huh .... devious? You decide for yourself.

Stewart - The jet is the least of my concerns about Palin. As woman my big issue is choice. I am not necessarily pro abortion but I am most definately pro choice. A woman should have the right to choose and no one should be able to legislate that choice! Now I'll get off my soap box.

This is not mundane crap - but refelctive of the mind-set of these candidates.

Stewart, I cannot agree you more on your comment above.

Your arguement does not make the point. It only shows that you missed the point and subsequently, the big issues. All of the candidates are human and if you're out to nit pick, you will always find something to be negative about. If this is all you have on Sarah Palin, then I'd say she's doing very well.

Posted by Marcia Wray (Carolina One Real Estate) over 3 years ago

Huiting - Mr. Tucker couldn't answer the question because there was nothing to say, except that Campbell Brown was right, and her question showed Palin for what she is - "a pit-bull with lipstick" who will say and do anything to further her career.

Marcia - It's time to WAKE  UP andrealize that a lie to simply appeal to the crowd is not nit picking - it's holding the speaker accountable. But then so many Republicans are prepared to not hold their Government accountable, and that's why Bush, Cheney, Rove et al have got away with their illegal and contemptful behavior for the past 8 years.

Never in any Interview did Sarah Palin State that She Sold the jet on E-bay.  In virtually every interview that I saw her, she stated and I quote  "I Put it on E-bay"   she never once said she Sold it on ebay..  I love the way the media changes words to fit their Agenda

Posted by Thomas Hargreaves (TriStar Financial Services) over 3 years ago

Thomas - Cut the "Republican Spin" .... we both know that her words were crafted to imply that she sold the jet on ebay.

She purposely gave that impression to side-step the truth - namely that the jet was sold by an aircarft broker after her futile attempts to sell it on ebay.

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago
Stewart, this is but one very small example, that does say something about the personalities ivnovled, and there are many more where that came from. I am sure the conservatives will dismiss all of them as similarly irrelevant. Unfortunately, if you combine unprovoked lying for a one-liner in a speech with her overal governing style (surrounding herself by friend, family, old school-mates qualified or not, and getting rid of dissenters faster than you can post something on E-bay), you have many more issues with this ticket. Of course, it's so much easier to just listen to republican talking points and not bother with research. BTW: Yea, Tucker absolutely is an idiot...

Okay. This is getting a bit partisan. So, let's talk truth:

McCain/Palin Lies

1. That Obama pushed for sex education in kindergarten, when actually, the proposal was to teach kids to be wary of sexual predators.

2 and 3.  That Obama got a house by providing Tony Rezko with political favors, including $14M from taxpayers. Obama actually paid market price for his home. Rezco's wife bough an adjoining lot and was able to sell it at a profit. The 14M was for low income housing (um, any developers out there think most of that was profit? didn't think so). Obama just wrote a letter saying it was a "worthy" project.

4. That Palin killed the bridge to nowhere. Well, we all know this one by now.

5. That Palin fought earmarks. She actually received more earmarks for Alaska than any other state (though she had dramatically reduced them).

Obama/Biden Lies

1. That McCain voted to cut educational funding 5 times (actually, it was only once, one of those times it was to increase and the other 3 were votes against increasing, which is very different from cutting).

2. That McCain wants a 100 year war (he said that people wouldn't care about troops being somewhere if they were safe, like West Germany and Japan)

3. That McCain thinks the cutoff for the middle class is $5M (he said this tongue-in-cheek and was followed by "but seriously...")

4. That McCain says we are not in a recession. They actually use footage of him saying this in an ad. Of course the add is from last year when, um, we weren't in a recession.

5. That Palin somehow favors going to war with Russia to protect Georgia. She does favor letting Georgia into Nato (like both Obama and Biden) and the Nato treaty explicitly states that an attack on one is like an attack on all.  The positions on both sides are kinda scary.

Check it all out at www.factcheck.org (and, yes, even they get it wrong sometimes!)

The truth is that both sides lie and stretch the truth. I am not excusing it. In fact it sickens me. What sickens me more is how many of us blindly accept the talking points of the side that we support. Kind of p*sses me off. It just keeps us from coming together as a nation and seriously addressing real issues. Our founding fathers must be turning in their graves.

Mary Lou - I'm not sure which debate you were watching - but if it was the Presidential candidate debate with Obama and McCain last friday night, I cannot understand why you feel being a Republican made you proud.

What exactly did McCain say or do to instill that pride?

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago

Where is the outrage over the degrading and disrespectful treatment of Palin?  The sexual comments, the nude painting of Palin in a public venue, comments on her appearance, her personal choices, her family.

I thought that the right to choose means that  a woman should be able to make lifestyle choices based upon her own beliefs.  If her beliefs are not in line with yours, it doesn't mean hers is wrong, it is just wrong for you.

I'm saddened to see that a woman running for office is ridiculed for physical attributes, where a man would not be subjected to the same treatment.  Such sexism is demeaning to women.

And even though diversity is touted, it seems the ones that are most vocal are intolerant of those who have different religious and moral beliefs.   We should be able to have opposing views without resorting to name calling and false information perpetuation.  The end does not justify the means to get there.  Let's keep some integrity and respect along the way. Wendy

Posted by Baldwin Realty Group, LLC over 3 years ago

Wendy - You speak about "false information perpetuation".

In the Vice Presidential debate against Joe Biden, it was Sarah Palin who continually perpetuated false statements about Obama's record. Why should she be held to a lesser standard that anyone else in this election?

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago

I never said she should be held to a lower standard, just asking for equitable treatment.  Every candidate should be called out on mispresentations and falsehoods, and that happens on both sides.   I just don't recall seeing nude paintings of any of the other candidates.  WB

Posted by Baldwin Realty Group, LLC over 3 years ago

Clear examples of Palin's continual efforts to perpetuate false information is her repeated statements about how she put the governor's plane on ebay (trying to give the impression she sold it on ebay, which she didn't); her repeated statements that Obama wants to raise taxes on all Americans (only taxpayers earning over $250,000 will pay more taxes); and her statements that she has foreign policy experience (simply because Alaska is in close proximity to Russia does not count as international experience).

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago

I agree that both campaigns have misrepresentations, but I also see that they did get it sold and that the true fact was that she didn't want to use the jet as her predecessor did and that the money she made from the sale went to the state of Alaska, so who cares HOW she sold it, as long as it sold and that she did what she thought was best for the PEOPLE of Alaska, which is a lot more than we can say for a lot of the politicians out there, right?

Posted by Josh Schlesselman (Keller Williams) over 3 years ago

No Josh, I must diagree with you - Facts are facts and misrepresentations are misrepresntations.

What else will she lie about, given the chance?

Posted by Stewart Penn - Los Angeles Real Estate (Penn Properties) over 3 years ago

It's only politics. Unfortunately that is how the game is played and I suspect Obama's camp has participated in the games as well.

Posted by Coldwell Banker Ponderosa over 3 years ago

Did you know: Sarah Palin claims Alaska "produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy."

According to FactCheck.org, it is simply untrue that Alaska produces anything close to 20 percent of the U.S. "energy supply", a term that is generally defined as energy consumed. The truth is that Alaska's production accounted for only 2.4 percent.

Was this an exaggeration, misstatement, half-truth, or blatant lie?

McCain defends this false assertion of 20% by referring to the Web site of the Resource Development Council for Alaska, Inc. - However, according to this site, Alaska's oil and gas industry has produced more than 16 billion barrels of oil and 6 billion cubic feet of natural gas, accounting for an average of 20 percent of the entire nation's domestic production.

It refers only to "oil and gas" production, not total energy. It refers only to production, not total consumption or supply. And the 20 percent figure is an "average" over many years.

This indicates that neither McCain nor Palin actually comprehend the details about which they're speaking.

With a lack of understanding (or acknowledgement) of the real facts, how can voters trust either McCain or Palin with the job of President of the United States of America?

..... seems like McCain's fact checking is as thorough as his vetting of Palin
