LA Connection Property Blog: McCain picks Sarah Palin (Miss Congeniality) for Vice President

McCain picks Sarah Palin (Miss Congeniality) for Vice President

Who is Sarah Palin and what does she stand for?

This morning the news broke that John McCain has picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. The 44-year old Governor of Alaska is not a well know public figure - so America needs to learn what her qualifications are to be Vice President - the person to step into the role of President of the United States of America should anything happen to the 72-year old Republican Presidential nominee.

My first reaction was this was a ploy to get the Hillary Clinton supporters - a move to get the female vote. But researching online it became clear that Sarah Palin is a Christian Conservative who does not support a woman's right to choose and blongs to Feminists for Life, and that in itself must alienate most of the Clinton supporters. She also supported Alaska's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Her relative inexperience in International Politics is another important consideration that the Republicans need to address since this is one of the most relevant considerations for the position.

Hi Stewart,  the Republicans have been picking vice-presidents that would scare people since Quayle.

I am from Arkansas, and when Bill Clinton and Al Gore ran the first time I actually had "friends" that voted for them because they thought one or both of them were cute-maybe that will work in her favor for the uneducated voters haha

What a team!  Hopefully this pick will encourage even more people to vote Obama/Biden.

Posted by Dianne Deming (RE/MAX Realty Group) over 12 years ago

Those Clinton supporters who said that they would rather vote for McCain would probably have another reason to vote for him, as they feel hurt by Obama's unwillingness to invite Clinton even though she is much more powerful candidate for this ticket then Biden.

Does not look like McCain hurt himslef with this choice. Now it is all in her corner, if she can be likable, and win the voters, especially the undecided.

Stewart, He picked the only woman republican that is pro-life. What an insult to qualified Republican woman. he went to the right instead of the center. There go the independents.

She just said "We have to prevent Iraq from getting nuclear weapons"

Kim - I believe the entire country needs to do their research. I had never heard of this woman before today.

I think there will be a lot of excitement over this nomination over the next few days, but then voters will realize that McCain actually shot himself in the foot, for several reasons.

Okay Stewart, your post was up 28 minutes before mine. She is definitely conservative both socially and fiscally. I was not surprised that McCain picked a female nor that she is so conservative. I am surprised at her inexperience as that was a main point of his argument against Obama.

Anthony - As usual, you make great points.

I also found it curious that Sarah Palin's husband - Todd Palin - works for BP Energy Corp outside of the fishing season.

Isn't BP part of "big oil"?

Stewart,

If he gets elected and something should happen to him, a novice politician from Alaska with 2 years experience would have to lead this country! I am desperate to see a woman in the White House but this is just a blatant ploy to go after those disenfranchised HIllary voters, not a wise choice for the country.

This pick is unfortunate for me on so many levels...

The Hillary Vote: This is complete slap in the face of Hillary supporters, pandering to their vote with a former beauty queen, greatly UNDERestimates the intelligence of them and what most of them stand for..she is NO Hillary, and for her to claim even a small portion as those 18 million votes as "hers" is undeniably insulting.

The Inexperienced factor: Throw that out the window completley. I had been leaning in support of Obama, but did have a small fear of his inexperience in a crisis..his VP pick of Biden clinched that worry for me.It would scare me to death to have a woman with no more experience than me (a football mom) become President by default. Biden is a strong backup.

The DRAMA that precedes her: She is under investigation in Alaska on ethics issues. The investigation invloves members of her family...after only 1/1/2 years of being a Governor.

The Big-Oil Factor: Something is fishy to me. Her husband is an oil production engineer, she wants drilling in ANWR, and McCain's biggest campaign supporters  is oil companies..strange bedfellows to make such a sudden choice.

McCain as met this woman only once before and and talked to her on the phone twice...how does he know anything about her...? What leg is he standing on here...? She is younger than all but two of his children..that creeps me out.

But, that's just me;)

You're kidding, right?  Exactly what experience does a Senator of 140 days bring to the Democratic ticket as the Top Dog?

Posted by Margaret Woda, Maryland Real Estate & Military Relocation (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.) over 12 years ago

This is funny! "I don't know anything about her, but......" Oh and for future reference, check out my blog. I predicted she would be the pick six weeks ago. And then there is this from Ted Baker:

"...you worry about our VP pick being ready to replace Senator McCain if necessary ? And the alternative is placing Senator Obama with no, zero, nada, zip  executive experience in charge NOW as the lead candidate on the ticket ?

Besides - have you met John McCain's mother? at 93 she can whip both of you and me into the bargain.  He seems to have good genes for longevity.

It is sweet of you to care but all indications are that Governor Palin could do the job just fine if necessary, thank you very much.  She leads with principles and solid core beliefs - not opinion polls.  She seems to be on the right side of most of the confrontations she has faced as Governor.  Read up on this unusual lady before you make up your mind - and come back and let us know what you think.

Wikipedia article <here> as a starting point for your convenience.

applauseEnvironment? important -but oil is more important for the nation right now - favors drilling in ANWR.  State (with her leadership) is running $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help with alternate transportation fuel.

Iraq - her son is US Army shipping out to Iraq in September.  Says as mother of son in Iraq and as Commander of Alaska National Guard - John McCain is the man she wants as Commander-in-Chief.  (by the way, she visited wounded Alaska troops from Iraq in Germany. To my knowledge she spent her time with troops not playing basketball.

Abortion - she is pro-life and lives it.  Her youngest son has Downs Syndrome - detected before birth, she refused to abort her child, knowing he would have special needs all his life. Remarkable story.

Unions - she is former union member, her husband is current Steel Workers Union member. (five kids, 20 year marriage so far)

Reformer - opposed corruption and unethical behavior in high state and party officials - at risk of her own career. Has opposed corruption tied to oil.  Running natural gas pipeline (not favored by oil companies).

Earmarks - stopped construction of Bridge to Nowhere.  Said Thanks but no thanks to federal monies - told feds that if her state wanted a bridge, they would build it themselved.

Has rebated state oil revenues to citizens to offset gas prices.

Not only member of NRA but avid outdoorswomen and hunter (has her own sea plane)

This lady has demonstrated that she not only talks the talk - she walks the walk.  She keeps the people of her state first in her mind when she makes decisions."

I was really praying that McCain would choose Romney but when I woke up to the news of Sarah being his choice I was elated! I am so excited for women likeminded like her to be in this position, like me. She and I share the same beliefs and I am so proud that a woman who believes that babies in the womb are human beings and have rights like you and I, will stand for that right.

I am so excited that she is so much like me and it empowers me and all my friends who are like me and fills us with hope for the future of conservative women. More power to Sarah! She is a rising star, as Glenn Beck says. Katerina

Yes, this is great she is just like you, and me too.  I'm a football mom, I like chili, and played tennis in college. Makes me feel all warm and cozy...Girl Power, rah, rah, rah...

But PLEASE stop and think. If another 911 happens, and our President is taken out, will it really matter what her thoughts are on abortion...?

Seriously, can you think back for one second? George W was reading a book in an elementary school when it happened. He was wisked away to the Air Force One, which circled in the sky for hours. Dick Cheney was rushed underground, in hiding, ready to remotely run this country, the FAA, NORAD in Colorado, he was almost in the position to be responsible for calling up F-15 fighter jets that were going to blow up ANY remaining airlines in the sky that were highjacked..take them out, no questions asked. Now we run the risk of electing a VP who doesn't even "know what the VP does everyday" nor was she intelligent enough to look it up on WikiPedia. Joe Biden yes, Sarah Palin...shoot me!

It's amazing how quickly we forget...

This woman seems so nice and lovely but totaly unqualified.  Is she rich or not, they are trying to say she is like you and me but she owns a sea-plane and apparently those things go for about 100,000 so she is not all that middle class, maybe compared to most politicians but a couple with 5 children having that kind of money left over for recreation must have some outstanding source of funds.

Oopsy Daisy on the "Bridge to Nowhere".......

In a 2006 interview with the Anchorage Daily News during her gubernatorial campaign, Mrs. Palin had a different view of the bridge.

Asked "would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?" she replied: "Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now - while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."

Guess she was for it before she "mislead" the nation that she was against it. Not ready for prime time.

Scott - The nomination of Sarah Palin is turning into a huge political circus .....:)

Not only do the facts reflect badly on Sarah Palin - but how badly does her nomination reflect on McCain's judgement?

Posted by COMPASS PALM SPRINGS | Stewart Penn, COMPASS Palm Springs - Broker Associate (COMPASS) over 12 years ago

Laura- And just like me, she would be whisked up in Air Force One and make decisions about protecting our country. I know in my heart of hearts that I could do that job. And I know Sarah can too. I know without a doubt that she is capable of making firm and country defense decisions. Not only that she is not afraid to pull the trigger when needed.

Stewart- thanks for the link to feminists for life, just the link I was looking for.

Dori- I know plenty of middle class people who own boats that cost over 100,000, what's the difference in a sea plane and a boat. In Alaska, it is a different lifestyle. Her husband is a blue collar worker who works on the slope. He separates the gas from the oil. He is up on that slope for one week on and one week off. He makes very good money doing that job just as all the other employees their do and they get great benefits. She certainly is more like middle class than Obama- in case you did not know, Obama is a multi millionaire. Of course, I don't see any thing wrong with being a millionaire, as that is my goal too.

Hi Stewart. Sara Palin doesn't come close to being qualified. Its sad really because there are other Republican women who would have made a better VP choice.

Posted by delete account over 12 years ago

Stewart - You would think that Palin is Elizabeth Dole by the way the RNC is commenting on her. What really has she done other than accept earmarks by the millions of dollars and flip flopped on a bridge to nowhere and marry a man who once joined a party to succeed from the United States (probably why he was arrested for drunk driving was a conspiracy by us to prevent him from doing so) Maybe if she stops being a pitbull and starts being human she will recognize for herself she isn't qualified.

Posted by John Guiney, e-PRO, CBR (Keller Williams Realty) about 12 years ago

Is this self-proclaimed lipstick-wearing pitbull really sophisticated enough to deal with people from other countries and cultures? The women has only travelled overseas ONCE.

I believe she lacks the skills and nuances for "Big-Time Politics".

Posted by COMPASS PALM SPRINGS | Stewart Penn, COMPASS Palm Springs - Broker Associate (COMPASS) about 12 years ago

Stewart:  Mrs. Palin is certainly stirring things up.  But despite the right wing rhetoric, I think it's clear that the Straight Talk Express has gone off the tracks.  They can't attack Obama for not having executive experience for just being a Senator.  That would backfire since McCain is a lifer in the Senate...same as Joe Biden.  They can't talk about inexperience with Obama and still beam with pride at Palin's experience.  It's utterly ridiculous.  McCain had a much better shot with another pick.  And after her speech last night, it's clear that she does lack the much needed skills and nuance.  She's an attack dog.  She's the cute and polished bad cop to McCain's bumbling and poor speaker good cop.  I am a disgruntled Hillary supporter...at least I was.  I am squarely in this for Obama now.

As the truth of the Sarah Palin saga unfolds, we learn some interesting things about the personalities and values of the people involved in the story:

Sarah Palins' pregnant 17-year old daughter (Bristol) is going to marry the father of her child - Levi Johnston. The New York Post has excerpts from Johnston's MySpace page:

On his MySpace page, Johnston boasts, "I'm a f - - -in' redneck" who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. "But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- - - and just f - - -in' chillin' I guess." "Ya f - - - with me I'll kick [your] ass," he added. He also claims to be "in a relationship," but states, "I don't want kids."

"I found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies; someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past'' - 2008 John McCain announcing Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Tonight, a bi-partisan investigation has concluded that Sarah Palin violated ethics rules by trying to remove her former brother in law from his job as a state trooper. She abused her power as governor of Alaska.

Is this McCain's ideas of someone who fights corruption?

Well Stewart we all now know that "Miss Congeniality" is definitely a mis- nomer when referring to Palin, don't we?  Someone who goes for the throat, who initiates a vendetta against a public servant, someone who gets up in front of crowds and spews hate, someone who is a proponent of killing wolves which are vital to the eco system of Alaska, someone who views killing innocent animals as "sport" is anything but congenial.  Palin makes Kathryn Harris look like Mother Teresa!
