Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer - A Real-Life Political Thriller

I recently watched a little-known movie that I'm surprised hasn't garnered much more attention - "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer".

"Client 9" (a documentary) is as compelling as any Hollywood political thriller, full of real-life characters who seem larger than life. The most shocking part is that this is all non-fiction - it actually happened, and continues to happen today.

"Client 9 takes an in-depth look at the rapid rise and dramatic fall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. As NY's Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer prosecuted crimes by America’s largest financial institutions and some of the most powerful executives in the country. After his election as Governor, many believed he was on his way to becoming the President. Then The New York Times revealed that Spitzer had been caught seeing prostitutes, and the “Sheriff of Wall Street” fell quickly from grace. With unique access, the film explores the hidden contours of hubris, sex and power".

I think the real story here isn't about Spitzer's involvement in prostitution, but rather about money, power and political manipulation.

Stewart, don't forget stupidity as one of the themes. I believe he paid for the services with a bank wire.

Sounds like a cool flick.  I love thrillers.  I wonder if it's a book?

Looks like a great flick. Yes, stupidity but at least he he resigned. He quit, he bowed out. Right wing "family Values" Republican hypocrites involved in sex scandals never resign. They not only don't resign they run for re election. You think there is a double standard on political sex scandals?

Andrew - While Spitzer was stupid in his actions, I don't think that's the main point of this movie.

Instead, it's a real-life version of Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities" where the characters get so caught up with their money and power that they see themselves as "Masters of the Universe" - much like the Wall Street executives and politicians in the time leading up to the global financial meltdown of 2008.

Cindy - Client 9 isn't a book, but a documentary by Alex Gibney, the director of such movies as "Enron - The Smartest Guys in the Room" and the 2007 Academy Award winning "Taxi to the Dark Side".

Stewart, I just want to know how he got on a talking heads show after being dragged through the mud? A real phoenix back from the ashes effect. Man seems intelligent but NOT in some areas with his behavior in the past. Why do we glorify this anyway? Focusing on bad behavior as a voyeur for ourselves? Can't explain it. Shouldn't we do a documentary on GREAT behavior? I know they have that greed in America series on TV too. I guess BAD sells.

Aloha Stewart,

When I lived in DC my parents asked me why I had decided to move to a PMS city. What's a PMS city I naively asked? It's a place where Power, Money, and Sex are the primary preoccupations of it's inhabitants in that order. It didn't take me very long to find out how profound and disturbing that observation was. Mr. Spitzer is just one example of a legion of politically ambitious, self-serving criminals that continually abuse the system to ingratiate themselves, expand their bank accounts and satiate their inflated libidos and egos. The sex trade in DC is second only to Las Vegas in generated revenues from the sex industry. The presumption is that Vegas is "servicing" tourists and DC, politicians. Those same politicians than have the gall to claim moral superiority, deny equal rights to US tax payers, and prop up corrupt business' and other hippocrates they are indebted to, all under the guise of civil service.

Peace,
